Wiki Leaks : China was behind the Google attack!

A new set of classified documents released by the whistle blowing site wiki leaks shows that China was indeed behind the cyber attack faced by Google on December 2009. As a result, Google had pulled out of Chinese search engine business although they still have limited presence there in other fields.

Although there was widespread speculations that China was behind the series of cyber attacks, Chinese Government had vehemently opposed these allegations.

As quoted from the NY Times

China’s Politburo directed the intrusion into Google’s computer systems in that country, a Chinese contact told the American Embassy in Beijing in January, one cable reported. The Google hacking was part of a coordinated campaign of computer sabotage carried out by government operatives, private security experts and Internet outlaws recruited by the Chinese government. They have broken into American government computers and those of Western allies, the Dalai Lama and American businesses since 2002, cables said.

The attack which targeted more than 30 companies including Google is known as Aurora and the source had been identified as a server in a university aided by Chinese Military by security experts. Google had said that the hackers were aiming at accounts of human right activists. The US State department acted aggressively asking Chinese government for explanation. But as stated above, the Chinese government declined all allegations.

Now the outcome of this wiki leaks leak is yet to be found out.
